Dear Friends,

The magnitude of Hurricane Ian slowly comes to light. We all have a sense of disbelief as well as a heightened awareness of how fragile life is. In a matter of hours, so much of what we’ve taken for granted for a lifetime is washed away to make living an unanticipated, unimaginable challenge.

But despite the magnitude of the destruction, human abilities to adapt, endure, and re-build persist. Need will be greeted by help…because we can.

“Because we can” is hope. In Nicaragua, in Florida, in our own families… it heals, it comforts, and it nourishes.

Thank you for sharing that hope with so many through all you do.

With gratitude,

Chuck

SPONSORSHIP CORNER: MEET KEYLING ANAHI CHAVARRIA MORA

Note: Our student sponsorships are the backbone of Neighbors to Nicaragua’s ability to provide the many services we share with our great community. The cost of a full sponsorship is $70 a month which helps us pay our expenses for salaries, food, and a myriad of obligations. If you would like to sponsor Keyling, please let us know. We are grateful to each of our sponsors and to for your consideration to become one.

Keyling Anahi Chavarria Mora is 8 years old. Her mother came to us after she and Keyling took up residence with Keyling’s grandmother. The move was an economic necessity after Dad left the family. They live in a one-room home.

We enrolled Keyling in Amelia’s “reforzamiento” (reinforcement) class. It offers targeted attention to five students at a time who are struggling with a specific school subject. Amelia reports that Keyling is making good progress. Her reading is more fluent, and she writes with more confidence. Keyling also receives a nutritious meal each day she is with us. Mom is grateful and supportive, and together, we’re building Keyling’s self-esteem.

Keyling was falling behind in her second-grade reading and writing skills. Sometimes, this is the result of poor instruction in Nicaragua’s public schools, and sometimes it’s the result of situational trauma. Mom was concerned and came to meet with us for help.

Welcome: Our New Class of Salon-Skills

Neighbors to Nicaragua’s Matt Haley Vocational Center welcomes the students of its final of Level I Salon Skills (manicures and pedicures) for 2022. The graduates of Level I and II from earlier this year are all working – either from their homes or as part of local businesses. The income they earn helps significantly during these challenging economic times in Nicaragua. Below are photos of our terrific, patient instructor Oscar, our students, and our willing volunteer “subjects.”

Two Early Christmas Gifts We Would Love to Have that Don’t Cost a Cent. It Will Take Fewer Than 10 Minutes to Complete Both!

#1: Please Take Five Minutes or less (promise!) to learn about and to switch to Smile.Amazon.Com

If you use Amazon.com, can you make a small change that won’t affect your shopping experience at all? Instead of logging into “Amazon.com,” simply log into “Smile.Amazon.com” When you log in the first time, the toolbar at the top will offer the opportunity to support your favorite non-profit. Choose Neighbors to Nicaragua (please)! Then bookmark this site, so that whenever you want to order something from Amazon, you’ll order from smile.amazon.com. instead. Amazon will donate a small fraction of your purchase price back to us each quarter. There is no difference in the website from that of Amazon.com in any way. They’re exactly the same site! Last quarter it was about $170. Click HERE to a news broadcast (two-minutes long) about it. Thank you!

#2: Please Take Five Minutes or Less (promise!) to go to visit our page on GreatNonProfits.Com.

Please click HERE and leave a brief, positive review. Some donors visit this site for donation guidance, and for years Neighbors to Nicaragua has maintained the Great Nonprofits’s highest honors. To continue, we need only five more new reviews by the end of October. A few words mean a great deal. Again..Thank you!
