Dear Friends,

“What’s your mission statement?” It’s a question we’re asked from time-to-time.

We have an answer on paper…but honestly, we can never know what our mission is with any certainty.

Each human being we encounter is our next lesson in learning how to live through service. It requires a surrender to be present – not “in control” – with a sense of gratitude for all we receive through listening, guiding, and helping.

Whatever our mission is, it is beyond words. And although it may transcend our abilities to know it precisely, it doesn’t impede our abilities to show up for it…together.

Thank you for making this privilege possible.

With gratitude always,

Chuck

Please Excuse Our Excessive Pride: Meet Doctor Adrianna Huembes

Six years ago, 18 year-old Adrianna Huembes came to Neighbors to Nicaragua to ask for help. She was chosen in a highly competitive qualifying test to win a full scholarship for a university pre-med program in Managua. But she had no resources for transportation, uniforms, equipment, textbooks, seminars, graduation fees, etc. We agreed to help find a sponsor and a wonderful sponsor from St. John the Beloved Parish came forward to help her.

Adrianna ran into a personal challenge three years in. She wanted to take a break. Maycól arranged for some help and encouraged her to persevere. He reassured her that we had plenty of faith in her to persevere.

This past Wednesday, Maycól attended the last barrier between Adrianna Huembes and Dr. Adrianna Huembes, the defense of her thesis on “warning signs of the presence of dengue in adolescents”.

In her speech afterwards, she thanked her sponsor (whom she called “my Godmother”), Maycól’s guidance, and Neighbors to Nicaragua. Congratulations Adrianna. You’re an inspiration!

New Skills For Victoria

This is 47 year-old Victoria del Carmen Polanco Quiro. She is a single mother of three children, ages 10, 12, and 17, and is a student at our Matthew James Haley Vocational Center. In the afternoons, she sells atole (a masa/corn drink) on the streets of Granada. She wants to learn new skills to support her family. While she’s practicing her scissor technique, our more experienced student, Justo Pastor Gonzales Obando, age 19, is cutting his brother Rafael’s hair. Welcome, Victoria!

Play Ball!

Neighbors to Nicaragua sponsors some of our students in a young women’s kickball league. Their shirts read “Vecinos” (neighbors) to Nicaragua.
