Dear Friends,

Because Nicaragua’s school year runs parallel with the calendar year, December is our big wrap-up month: graduations, last classes, our year-end party, and a whole lot of smiles as we close out 2025.

Students are excited for six weeks of vacation, and our teachers and staff are just as happy for a little extra sleep and some good family time.

As the noise of the year recedes, we’re left with deep and quiet gratitude for all who make the daily life of our community possible.

The warmest of wishes to you for a joyful holiday season, an abundance of happiness, and good health in 2026.

Thank you for all you do. It’s the essence of this time of year.

Chuck

One special graduation story: Yeimi Abigail Tonorio Mendoza

It doesn’t mean much to many, but to us, it’s a hero’s story.

Yeimi’s home (below) is across the street from the school where she lives with her family. When she was 13, she enrolled to learn English from our teacher Marvin in 2021. Over the years, Marvin became a mentor as well as a teacher. He encouraged her to stay the course, and she did.

In a barrio where many don’t complete primary school because economic needs require their labor, she graduated from high school three weeks ago, walking proudly through the odds to receive her diploma.

We’re so proud of you Yeimi. You’ve taught us what strength looks like. We’re here to support you on the next part of your journey if you need us. Thank you for your example.

And now it’s time for…
the invasion of the ELVES!

The final day of class for the year is not the final day of school. It marks the start of a busy week. Our annual Christmas party requires all hands on deck: teachers, artists, cooks, parents, students, and anyone anxious to help. Santa’s workshop kicks into action!

Before Thanksgiving, Isabel, our chef, begins by designing three piñatas. Under her guidance, the students come in on their own time after class to build them. They love the task. Fun is suddenly in the air.

Meanwhile, the teachers set up their helpers’ workshop to make decorations. Actually, they made an entire stage area for the ceremonies and entertainment.

A lot was cookin’ in the kitchen….food for over 250 guests. Gift bags for candy were packed by our teens in the barrio for everyone.

Some guests arrived early to get a good seat.

The Master of Ceremonies (and a special guest in a red suit) welcomed everyone!

The Celebration opened with a prayer from our wonderful assistant chef, Claudia.

The fun began with singing, games, and prizes.

…and if piñata-bashing were an olympic sport, our students would be gold medalists! Let the candy flow!

Food is served….first inside
