Founded in 2012
Neighbors to Nicaragua’s primary work is in Nueva Esperanza, a barrio (whose name means “new hope”) in one of Nicaragua’s poorest areas just south of Granada.
Our vision for Neighbors to Nicaragua began in April 2011 when founder Chuck Selvaggio traveled to Granada, Nicaragua to study Spanish. After seeing many homeless youths, Chuck wanted to help with education and programs that would ease the effects of poverty in the area he visited.
How we help
Be part of that vision. Continue Chuck’s good work. By donating, you help ensure that Neighbors to Nicaragua thrives into its second decade.
Support a student
Neighbors to Nicaragua meets its many financial obligations through direct support between our students and their sponsors. Please sponsor one of our students for only $70 a month or $840 annually. See our contact page if you have questions or want more information. Thank you.
Andy de Jesús Conde Rodriguez
Age 12
Andy’s mother came to us for help because Andy was having trouble with Math and Spanish classes this year in 5th grade. Both of his parents work full-time at low-wage jobs to get by, and his father has to be away to work whenever he’s able to get it. Andy lives with one other sibling and his parents in a two-room house behind our center. He is doing well in Amelia’s classes and his teacher in his school has noted improvement since his attendance with us after his regular schooling each day.
José Andres Diaz
Age 16
José goes by his middle name, Andres. He lives with his mother and five siblings. In the afternoon, he is a caretaker for two of his younger siblings while his mother leaves the home to work. He is studying literacy skills with Roberto, our youth counselor and teacher. His goal is to learn educational and vocational skills to help provide a better life for his mother and family.
Valeska del Socorro Martinez Urbina
Age 12
Valeska is enrolled in a special public school program to catch up to her peers. She has suffered from spotty attendance in traditional school because her family needed her to help sell tortillas to make enough money to survive. She entered our program, and her teacher, Jenny, has been monitoring her closely while counseling her parents on how to best help her. Valeska has not missed a day of class, and we’re happy to have her with us.
Allisson Rosbel Garcias Obando
Age 6
Allison is in first grade. There are seven people who live in her home where only two are working. While her parents work, her oldest sister is in charge of getting her to class and helping her with her homework. She leaves school with food to take home with her, and her teacher says that both her work in class and her attendance are very good.
Dylan Saúl Calderón Andino
Age 10
Both Dylán’s mother and his brother have been students in our school. Dylán struggles with an attention deficit disorder which makes his ability to concentrate challenging. This occasionally manifests in his behavior but he has a personal goal to learn how to read and write, and his teacher in conjunction with Dylán’s family members have formed a support group of instruction and encouragement to help him make this a reality. His progress so far is encouraging.
Cristhofer Tadeo Sequeira Romero
Age 6
Cristhofer’s mother is a single mom who receives little assistance from his father. She works as the sole breadwinner of the family and when Cristhofer first came to us he was behind his classmates in math. His mother was concerned and asked for a spot in our reinforcement classes. After nearly a year with us, Cristhofer has made impressive progress and is more at grade level for beginning second grade shortly while continuing with us each day. We’re proud of his efforts!
